Save Teen Lives
Parker’s Driver Training Facility
The Parker Fire Safety Foundation, the non-profit partner of the Parker Fire Protection District, has worked steadily over the last 5 years to bring the Driver Training Facility to fruition in Parker. The Safety Foundation began offering hands-on crash avoidance skills courses at Ponderosa High School over 15 years ago, following a number of teen driving fatalities in Douglas County.
In 2002, Parker residents voted to approve the use of land near Plaza Drive and Twenty Mile Road to build a dedicated driver training facility. In 2004, increased efforts to raise funds for this facility followed the deaths of 8 teens in car crashes in the Parker area. Construction began on the driving facility in June 2006 following significant public and private donations to the cause. The new training facility is located at 17801 E. Plaza Drive in Parker.
Curriculum has been implemented for the new driving facility which offers a “hands-on” defensive driving program for teens. This program provides students with development and practice of skills such as threshold braking, skid control and recovery and other crash avoidance techniques. The goal is to develop quick and appropriate responses to dangerous driving situations.
The Meyer Family has been supporting the program with funds raised through the Macedog Memorial Golf Tournament. Their daughter participated in the class in the fall of 2006, and along with her parents, encourages all teens to take the course.
Our goal is to provide Crash Avoidance Training to every teen driver in the Parker Fire District as well as Douglas & Elbert Counties.
